Ottawa Markets reopens ByWard and Parkdale Outdoor Markets on Thursday, June 18
June 11, 2020
OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- Ottawa Markets is excited to announce the launch of outdoor markets for the 2020 season at both ByWard Market and Parkdale Market.
The week of June 15, produce vendors will begin setting up to accept customers by Thursday, June 18. Produce vendors will be set-up for the opening of a physically-distant version of ByWard Market and Parkdale Market, Thursday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., starting Thursday, June 18.
With the gradual reopening of both outdoor markets, participating vendors starting next week include Rochon Gardens (ByWard Market and Parkdale Market). Parkdale-only vendors include Ferme Rêveuse, Richard Cléroux and Denise Cléroux, with more vendors returning in the coming weeks as local crops become available.
As a value-added feature for market vendors, both outdoor markets will be complemented by the continuation of the successful Ottawa Markets' online marketplace for residents: ottawamarkets.ca/online-store with pick-up at both Parkdale Market (Thursday) and ByWard Market (Saturday).
To ensure maintenance of a healthy environment for shoppers and adjusting with the growing season and demand, Ottawa Markets will continually add more vendors to both market locations.
"Building on the momentum of our online market supporting local and regional producers while safely bringing local produce to the community, we are eager to reopen the historic ByWard Market Square and Parkdale Market,” said Ottawa Markets’ Executive Director Zach Dayler. “Following public health and safety guidelines, vendors are prepared to welcome residents with safety measures in place."
Councillor Jeff Leiper commented: “The Parkdale Market is the 95-year-old heart of our community. Residents will be thrilled to have it back with good food and familiar faces."
Councillor Mathieu Fleury added: “The ByWard Market is the oldest farmers’ market in Ontario and we are glad to see Ottawa Markets adapt during this pandemic to ensure farmers and clients can have access to fresh, local produce in a safe way. Vendors and market stalls represent the heart of the market and with the reopening, the market is coming back to life. We are excited for the potential to increase the number of farmers in the future, to continue to make the ByWard Market one of the best local shopping spots in the city.”
